Author Kleland was born in the county of Surrej in Great Britain in the family of officer William Klelanda, who later became the government employee. The family moved in literary circles, and father Klelanda was friends with famous poet Alexander Poupom. From 1721 to 1723 John Kleland studied at the Westminster School, where he was instructed. In 1728-1740 served in Bombay in the British East Indian Company.
After returning to London Kleland wrote the novel "Fanni Chill. Fanny Hill or, Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure", the first part of which was published by him in 1747, and second - in 1748. Novel is one of the most famous works of English erotic literature. The story is carried out on behalf of young provincials who arrive in London in search of a job. In their capital, various erotic adventures await in the elegant brothel, where they go through naivety The work of the prostitute nevertheless did not bother the young heroine to find the current love. The working days of the whorehouse and the work of the prostitute are described in all details.
As a result of the frivolity, the novel has an ambiguous history of publications. So, even though it was translated into 12 European languages, the publication of the novel in the USA was banned for quite a long time. The publications in other languages covered anonymous insertions and additions. By 1963, the text closest to the original was collected by the efforts of American scholars (the manuscript is lost). Especially from this text under the unfolded title “Fanni Chill. The Woman's Memories for Joys" was the first Russian translation made, which was published in 1993. The new version of the translation was published in 2002.
Кleland is known as the author of several novels ("Memoirs of the Connoisseur", the collection of stories "Surprise of Love"), as well as plays ("Tit Vespassian", "The Donation of the Lady" and "Tombo-Chiki, or the American Barbarian"), but his later works could not be compared to "Fanni Chill" in terms of popularity.
