Russian icon "Ierusalimskaya Mother of God" wood double embossing Size: 30x40 cm Condition: New. The icon is inaugurated by the head of the temple Reverend Serafima Sarowski in the town of Sofrino.

According to the God-fearing legend of the churches that agree on the miraculous figures of the Mother of God were written by the first icon painter, the holy apostle and the evangelist of the Curvature during Prisnodevy's earthly life. They number Vladimir, Smolensk and other icons. It is believed that the manner of the Jerusalem icon was also written by the Apostle of the Curvature, and it occurred on the Holy Earth, in Gefsimani, on the fifteenth year after the Ascension of the Savior to heaven.

By the Byzantine Emperor Lev Velikom (457-474) the Jerusalem icon was moved to Constantinople and placed in the Temple of the Mother of God, which is called "Pigi", that is, "the source". The Scythians stopped at Emperor Iraklii (575-641) city, he was not taken only thanks to general prayer in front of this icon. In memory of such a miracle the wise men moved to one of the main temples of Byzantium - the Vlachernsky church, where it remained for almost three centuries.

At the beginning of the centuries the Jerusalem icon came to the Crimean city of Chersonese, from where Prince Vladimir Svyatoy took the icon to Kiev. When the Novgorodians immediately after the Kievans adopted holy baptism and conversion to Christianity, the prince sent this message to them in the foreword. But “Odigitriya” means “Putevoditelnitsa”.

The Sage of the Mother of God stayed in the Sofia Cathedral of Great Novgorod for more than four hundred years. The special love for the Jerusalem icon in many градах and весях of the Russian North is due to his veneration.

The compositional peculiarities of the icon are these. The Mother of God with the small child on her right hand is depicted on the belt and sees her son facing her. Мафорий, hanging freely from the head of the Mother of God, shows itself bright, often red, the other side in the cuffs. The mirror reflection of this иконографического type is called the Georgian Mother of God — this icon also was particularly respected in the local Novgorod lands.

mid-16th century In the 19th century, during the reign of Tsar John Groznogo, the Jerusalem icon was taken to Moscow's Assumption Cathedral and is placed among other shrines that patronized the previous specific principalities. Surrounded by general veneration, the icon remained in the Kremlin until 1812, when it was seized by the French and was taken to France. In Paris, in the Cathedral of the Paris Mother of God, the icon is and is preserved until now.
