The oldest mention of George by the church father Eusebius († 339) briefly reports his death as a martyr. The date of his death is mentioned here, today's name day of the saint. Legends soon emerged around the Asia Minor-Syrian region, reporting on different dates and events, but with the cruelty of torture and George's overcoming of his torment through his faith as the core of the statement. Specifically, Georg protests against persecution and discrimination against Christians and endures various torture methods designed to make him renounce Christianity. Georg survives - depending on the legend - some of them, until the (self-announced) end. Other elements in various sources and later additions concern, for example, the Christian ideal of poverty (George, portrayed as a noble knight, gives away his land to the poor before making his protest open) and the destruction of idols in pagan temples. In Islam, George is known as Circis (or Cercis) and is considered a prophet who strived to spread Christianity.
