The Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God is one of the most mysterious icons in the history of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is written in iconographic type "Odigitrija" (Greek. – Putevoditelnitsa). According to legend, the first Odigitrija was performed by the Evangelist of the Curvature while the Mother of God was still alive and is presented among the first three icons. Antiochian ruler Feofil placed this icon in the church built by it for its devotional veneration by the Christians. After Feofila's death, the icon appeared in Jerusalem, from where Evdokiye was brought by the wife of Emperor Feodosiya in Constantinople, near the middle of the Vth century, and is placed in the Vlachernsky temple. According to other sources - in the temple of the Odigon monastery is probably why, and it happens the title. In the Odigon monastery (i.e. the "guide" monastery), the sailors setting out on sea voyages had the custom of praying in front of the icon, asking for the preface or путеводительства.
There is also another explanation of the naming of this icon. According to ecclesiastical legend, the Mother of God once brought two saints to the Vlachernsky temple and, placing them in front of the Svoy icon, gave her sight. The third variant of the appearance of the title of the icon explains such naming that the icon accompanied the Greek emperor in his wanderings.
The icon was made in Rus in 1046 after the Byzantine tsar's daughter Anna, the daughter of Emperor Constantine IX. Monoswing, marrying Prince Vsevolod Yaroslavicha Chernigovsky is advised. After his death, the Odigitrii icon was inherited by his son Vladimir Vsevolodovich Monomachu, who was born of the Greek Tsar's daughter Anna. Vladimir Monomakh moved the icon of Odigitrii - the Blessing of the Mother - from Chernigov to Smolensk, where he knyazil from 1097, and placed it in the Cathedral Temple of the Assumption of the Mother of God, laid by him on May 3, 1101. Since that time, the icon Odigitrii began to be called Smolenskoju.
