Saint Seraphim of Sarov (Russian Серафи́м Саро́вский, scientific transliteration Serafim Sarovskij; born July 19th/July 30th, 1759 in Kursk; † July 2nd/January 14th, 1833 in Sarov), born Prokhor ( Russian: Прохор Мошнин), was one of the most famous Russian monks and mystics of the Orthodox Church. It is described as the largest starets (staritsa) of the 19th century.
He attempted to convey the monastic teachings of contemplation and self-negation to the laity and taught that the goal of the Christian life was the attainment of the Holy Spirit. Seraphim was canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1903.
