Matrona Dimitrievna Nikonova was born in 1881 in the village of Sebino, Tula province. The parents Dimitri and Natalia were farmers. In total, the family had four children: two brothers - Ivan and Mikhail, and two sisters - Maria and Matrona. Matrona was the youngest.
The family lived poor, and when Matrona's mother learned that she was expecting a fourth child, she decided to give the future child to an orphanage. But one day she had a dream: the unborn daughter appeared to Natalie in the form of a white bird with a human face and closed eyes and sat on her right hand. After believing the dream to be a sign, the God-fearing woman rejected the decision to give the child to an orphanage. The girl was born blind, but the mother loved her “unfortunate child.” From the very beginning, the Lord chose Matrona for a special service and placed on her a heavy cross, which she bore with obedience and patience throughout her life.
The seal of God's chosenness was with the child from the beginning. When the girl was brought to the temple to be baptized and immersed in a baptismal font, the priest and those present saw a column of fragrant, light smoke above the child. Then the priest, Father Basil, said: “I have baptized a lot, but this is the first time I see this, and this child will be holy”. At the same time, the father predicted that the girl would rise in his place and predict his death. So it happened a few years later, after the death of the father, the parishioners, who venerated Father Basil as a righteous and blessed, began to ask Matrona for consolation.
The girl's body also had a mark of God: on the chest there was a bulge in the shape of a cross. Somehow the mother began to scold Matrona: “Why are you taking the cross away from you?” “Mom, I have my cross on my chest,” the girl replied. "Dear daughter," Natalia asked herself, "forgive me! I scold you "... When the girl was very small, the people around her understood that they had a difficult child in front of them. On fasting days on Wednesdays and Fridays, the newborn did not eat anything and slept all day. As she grew older, the girl made her way to the icons at night, somehow she got on the shelf, filmed the pictures and played with them.
Matrona practically did not play with her peers, the children teased and mocked her, so the girl almost always sat at home. The Nikonovs' house was located near the Church of the Assumption of the Mother of God, and the only joy for them was visiting the temple, where Matrona and her parents regularly went. As she grew older, she came there alone, and when the mother did not find her daughter at home, the girl always found herself in the temple, as if in her second home.
At the age of 7, Matrona opened the gift of insight and healing of the sick. Relatives began to notice that she had knowledge not only of human sins, crimes, but also of thoughts. She sensed danger approaching, foresaw natural and public disasters. Through their prayers, people received healing from illnesses and comfort in their sorrows. Visitors came and drove to her. People went to the Nikonov hut, submarines, carts with patients from the surrounding villages and villages, from the whole district, from other districts and even provinces reached. They brought sick people who were confined to bed and the girl lifted them to their feet. Most often, patients were cured with water that Matrona gave after reading prayers over them. The girl herself did not recognize any miraculous power: "What, Matronushka God, or what? God helps in everything ". To thank Matron, people left food and gifts to their parents. So the girl, instead of becoming a burden to the family, became their main maid.
At the age of 14, Matrona, together with the daughter of the local landowner Lydia Yankova, visited many places of pilgrimage: Kiev-Pechersky and Trinity-Sergiev Lavras and other holy places. A meeting with the holy righteous John of Kronstadt took place in Kronstadt. After the service in St. Andrew's Cathedral, the saint asked the people to separate and said: "Matronushka, come to me. Here comes my change - the eighth pillar of Russia." Thus, Father John foresaw the special service of St. Matrona to the Russian people in times of persecution of the Church.
At the age of 17, another test hit the girl: her legs suddenly gave out. But Matrona also accepted this weakness without complaint and trusted in the will of God in everything.
