Schimberg
The Schimberg near Ershausen in the Thuringian district of Eichsfeld is 473.4 m above sea level. high mountain in the Eichsfeld Westerwald. The name of the municipality of Schimberg was derived from the mountain that characterizes the district.
The Schimberg rises in Südeichsfeld on the western edge of the Westerwald. Within the Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal Nature Park, it lies clockwise between the towns of Martinfeld in the northwest,
Großbartloff in the southeast, and Ershausen in the southwest; The district town of Heilbad Heiligenstadt is located about 10 km to the north-northwest.
The mountain is bordered by the Rosoppe valley in the west and the Wolfentalsbach in the southeast. In the northeast, the Martinfelder Schimberg (see section on mountain peaks) merges south of the Wagental into the plateau of the Westerwald.
To the south, the mountain ridge is adjoined by the elevations of the Heuberg (429.6 m) and the Eichberg (425.3 m) above Wilbich.
The approximately 4 km long and 2 km wide mountain ridge consists of several mountain peaks - sorted from north to south with heights in meters (m) above sea level
Martinfelder Schimberg (470.6 m), southeast of Martinfeld
Summit with Schimberg summit (473.4 m), just south of the Martinfelder Schimberg
Summit (458.4 m), in Junkerholz
South summit (457.1 m), between Ershausen and Großbartloff.
Schimberg in the narrower sense is considered to be the northernmost and southernmost hilltop.
There is evidence of a settlement in Ehrenborn or Ohrborn below the Martinfelder Schimberg, but it was described as desolate as early as the 15th century.[4] A farm or farm built on the Schimberg (with the barns mentioned) had to be abandoned due to a shortage of water on the permeable limestone soils. For centuries, parts of the now forested mountain ridge were treeless due to intensive agricultural use. The old connecting paths were often unrecognizable in winter due to fog and heavy snowdrifts and it was easy to get lost. After there were deaths, stones up to 1.5 m high were erected on the route between Ershausen and Großbartloff to improve orientation, two stones of which are still preserved today.
The Schimberg, which is predominantly covered with deciduous forest, is only used for agriculture at its foot and on steeper slopes. Numerous hiking trails lead from the surrounding towns into the mountain area. From individual vantage points, such as the Bartloffer View and the Ershäuser Window, there are distant views of the southwestern Eichsfeld and the northeastern Hesse mountains. Other sights include the Karl Spitzenberg monument above Martinfeld, the cross at the Martinfeld window erected in 2012 and the Guteborn chapel above Ershausen.
